Cultural Affairs Bureau sets up more than 40 “10-Minute Reading Corners” in the city’s districts and continues to invite people from all walks of life to build a citywide reading network

MACAU, October 20 - In order to promote citywide reading and encourage the public to have a lifelong reading habit, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) launched the programme “10-Minute Reading Corner” in April this year, installing embedded reading facilities in the city’s districts to progressively build a citywide reading network, bringing cultural resources to the community, and enhancing the development of Macao as a “City of Reading”. As of September, IC has set up over 40 “10-Minute Reading Corners” in various districts of Macao and in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

The “10-Minute Reading Corner” is an installation that combines reading and art. With the concept of “Where Culture Flourishes, Happiness Happens”, the installations have an outstanding design and vibrant colours, and are equipped with books and seats for the public to read indoors or outdoors. The installations offer a variety of free books, encouraging the public to make good use of their spare time for on-site reading, breaking the spatial limitations of traditional libraries and allowing them to enjoy the pleasure of reading anytime and anywhere.

These installations are located at sports facilities, education centres, medical institutions, elderly residential areas, parks and leisure areas, plazas, transport hubs, cultural facilities and cafés, including the Mong-Há Sports Centre, the Tamagnini Barbosa Sports Centre, the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion, the Areia Preta Health Centre, the Praia do Manduco Health Centre, the Ilha Verde Health Centre, the Nossa Senhora do Carmo-Lago Health Centre, Leisure Area of Kun Iam Statue Waterfront, Leisure Area of Edifício da Alameda da Tranquilidade, Leisure Area in Baía Norte do Fai Chi Kei, Leisure Area in Praça das Orquídeas, Leisure Area of Edifício Ip Heng in Seac Pai Van, Tap Siac Square, Praça dos Lótus in Bairro da Ilha Verde, Iao Hon Market Park, Flower City Park in Taipa, Taipa Ferry Terminal, Macao Cultural Centre, Macao Science Center, Government Apartment for Senior Citizens, Centre of Psycho-pedagogical Support and Special Education (Veng Tim), Parenting Education Centre and other public departments, as well as a number of local cafés and businesses, integrating reading into the daily lives of residents.

In order to further cover a broader reading network, the Public Library of IC continues to launch an open call for the participation of all sectors in the programme “10-Minute Reading Corner”. Participating entities only require to provide a suitable space; the relevant books and installations will be provided by IC. All local cultural and arts venues and facilities, public departments, private enterprises, shops, cafés and registered associations are welcome to participate, jointly creating reading corners across the city, developing the habit of reading in the daily lives and building Macao as a “City of Reading”.

In order to continue to promote the concept of “micro-reading”, IC will launch a series of promotional activities from October to December, including outreach interactive booths and activities on social media platforms.
