Building National Capacities to Safeguard Intangible Cultural Heritage in Palestine
The training brought together around 100 participants from relevant institutions and sectors, gaining practical knowledge on the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, including its principles of community participation and free, prior and informed consent, as well as hands-on skills in community-based inventorying, documentation methods and the design of safeguarding measures.
These training were organized as part of the project “Enhancing implementation of the 2003 Convention through community-based inventorying and urgent safeguarding measures in the State of Palestine,” funded by the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund and implemented in close coordination with the Ministry of Culture. The project seeks to deepen the engagement of communities, groups and individuals recognized as bearers of this heritage, update the national ICH inventory, and establish three cross-sectoral technical teams across the Northern, Central and Southern regions of Palestine.
Building on these trainings, participants will carry out fieldwork, documentation and inventory of living heritage, as well as support the elaboration of safeguarding measures for elements requiring urgent attention. The initiative is expected to advance the inventorying of eleven intangible cultural heritage elements across all the Palestinian governorates.
Through this work, UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture continue to strengthen the foundations for safeguarding Palestine’s living heritage while ensuring that its diverse cultural practices, knowledge and traditions remain visible, valued and transmitted to future generations.
